Malaysia gets WiMAX, Singapore only WiFi

This is a sad day for the Singapore mobile geek. Malaysia’s Maxis begins trials for WiMAX (802.16e Mobile WiMAX, not the pathetic 802.16d fixed WiMAX Qmax tried for a while in Singapore) and Singapore is only in the initial deployment phases of Wireless@SG (Mesh-WiFi).

Sure M1 has its HSDPA service going, but from my experience neither M1 Broadband nor Wireless@SG are much to shout about. And I’m not alone read the forums: M1 Broadband and Wireless@SG.

I don’t get it, why can’t we have WiMAX too? The next round of Intel-based laptops will have WiMAX built right in. If we started like Maxis did, we’d probably have full island deployment of WiMAX by end of 2009, a good time for a laptop refresh.

Come on IDA, all we ask for are a couple of frequency bands. I promise to use the service, really I would. ;-)

(Motorola, who is deploying Maxis’ WiMAX network is a Hill & Knowlton client.)

  1. You can check out some of this technologies at http://www.ocworkbench.com

  2. I think you need to read more.

Singapore government has issued to license for WIMAX. QMAX (www.qmax.com.sg) is already operating on WIMAX. And Pacnet is preparing its WIMAX network as well.

  3. What the pros and cons of Wimax vs Wifi Mesh?

Qmax has successfully deployed Wimax is many areas in Singapore. So why the use of Wifi Mesh?

  4. Wireless SG is only a trial and upgrade to 802.16e (Mobile WiMAX) is coming… maybe another year down the road, we will be able to surf the web and doing all eBusinesses at 120 kmh. Only if we can drive at that speed. :)

  5. Hopping from wifi base station to another wifi base station is not automatically handled, in another word, the so called roaming is not there. Imagine your large file uploading get interrupted and you have to redo again.

The same thing doesn’t happens for GPRS, 3G, and WiMax. :)
